What Was I Thinking?

I Just Thought Of Something...

...but it might involve spoilers for the season finale of the latest season of Doctor Who, so I'll hide in the Read More section.

All right, so, at the end of the big Cybermen/Dalek simultaneous invasion of Earth, The Doctor opens up a whosit to the space between space, into which gets sucked everything that has ever passed through that interstitial plane of existence. This would have included The Doctor and his faithful and endearing Companion, Rose Tyler, because they accidentally jumped universes a while back. There's lots of running around and shouting, but it winds up with Rose getting sent to (and stuck in) an alternate reality to avoid getting sucked in herself, while the Doctor hangs onto some pipework for dear life. It's all very sad.

But, and here's the thing I've just thought of, back in the old Doctor Who series, of which this one is a continuation, The Doctor spent some time in an alternate reality. I think it was called E-Space, as opposed to N-Space, where we live. If I remember correctly, and it's entirely possible I don't, Sara Jane Smith was his Companion at the time. Sara Jane was shown to be alive and traumatized at the time of this episode. If so, then she must have gotten sucked in too.

Oops.

And what about K-9? Or did that one blow up? So hard to keep track.

While the current DW series is definitely a continuation from previous ones, there have been plenty of continuity glitches of this sort. I mean, after forty-odd years of cheesy SF, you're going to get a few things out of whack. That having been said ...

The mere fact that the Doctor repeatedly claims that interdimensional travel is *impossible* could be used to argue that wherever Earth-C (Cybermen) is, it's a different sort of dimensional thang than the E-Space thang. Otherwise, the Doctor wouldn't have been so shocked every time someone travels between between Earth-D (Doctor) and Earth-C.

So Sarah should be safe. Assuming she wasn't gunned down by Cybermen in the interim. Or eaten by a Grue.

All I can say is that I hope the Gone-Forever-Really-No-I-Mean-It-This-Time Daleks really are. At least until Series 4. :-)

I looked it up later. Doctor's Companions at the time were Romana, K-9, and Adric. Romana stayed in E-Space, and Adric was mercifully killed by the Master. That only leaves the question of whether that was the same K-9. And whether Sara Jane was standing between him and the portal when it opened.

Although, E-Space is described as a sort of bubble universe annex of this one, rather than an entirely separate one, so maybe none of this matters anyway. I mean, obviously, none of this matters, but... you know what I mean.

It would be all too easy for one Dalek to have hightailed it offworld as soon as it escaped the Time Lord's prison. Even if he got dragged most of the way back, he might still be out there, hiding in a crater on the far side of the moon or something. I mean, if one could survive something that destroyed Gallifrey, a little interspatial vortex is nothing.

I'm such a huge geek.
